Can I borrow from this Library?

Borrowing is normally restricted to students and staff of the Department for Continuing Education with the following exceptions:

  • Academic staff fom other departments may borrow
  • Students on film studies courses or options may borrow film books and recordings 

All other University/Bodleian card holders are welcome to use the Library for reference. Exceptional loans may be made, please ask at the Library desk.

How many books can I borrow?

Weekly class students
You may borrow 4 books for 2 weeks (if you are attending more than one class, you may borrow up to 8 books).
If you are on a day or weekend course or are attending a lecture series, you are welcome to use the Library for reference but you will not be able to borrow books.

Award-bearing taught courses
You may borrow 8 books for 2 weeks.

Research students
You may borrow 10 books for 4 weeks.

OUDCE staff
You may borrow 20 books for 12 weeks.

Academic staff from other departments
You may borrow 8 books for 2 weeks.

Students on summer schools and short programmes
You may borrow 6 books for 2 weeks.

Students with a registered disability
You may borrow 10 books for 4 weeks (for more information on services, please see Services for readers with a disability)

Can I extend my loan?

Yes, as long as the book hasn't been requested.

You can extend, or renew, your loan(s) by:

  • Renewing them yourself on SOLO, the library catalogue. For information on how to do this, see the SOLO Guide or How do I renew my books?
  • You will receive a reminder by email when your books are nearly due back. You can reply to this email requesting a renewal
  • You can also send an email to requesting a renewal, please include your library card barcode number
  • You can ring us on 01865 270454. Please have your library card barcode number to hand.

How can I keep track of my loans?

You can view your loans on SOLO.

If you have a University card and Oxford Single Sign On

  • Click 'Sign in' and select 'Oxford Single Sign On'

If you have a Bodleian reader's card or a Continuing Education Library card

  • Click 'Sign in' and select 'Other Bodleian card holders'
  • Enter your barcode number leaving off any final letter or character, and your password

Once you have signed in, click on your name at the top right of the screen, and select "My SOLO".

The book I want is on loan

If all the copies of a book are on loan, you can place a hold on it (or reserve it) and it will be kept for you when it is returned. You will receive an email when the book is available, and we will keep it at the Library desk for 7 days.

How do I return books?

It is not possible to return books until further notice due to the COVID 19 closure. If it is vital that your return your books (for example because you are leaving the UK) then please contact Otherwise please keep hold of your books for now and rest assured that we will NOT fine you if they go over the due date.  We will contact you with details of how to return them in due course.  Apologies for this inconvenience.
