Data Library: Media, information and communication

Resources for researching the topic may include data from subscription databases, publicly available data portals or archived academic projects. Some suggestions are:

BBC Monitoring International Reports
Full text from 1979 – present available via Lexis Library. Provides access to broadcasts from 120 countries, and emphasises information from counties for which other news sources are not readily available.

British Universities Film & Video Council

TRILT: Television and Radio Index for Learning and Teaching
A comprehensive online listings service for UK television and radio including terrestrial, cable and satellite television (with regional variations), all national and many local radio stations, Asian-language, Irish, Scottish Gaelic and Welsh channels and programmes.
The database carries complete schedules for more than 475 UK channels with data from 1995 onwards. Data is available at least ten days before transmission and builds up as an archive of programme information and schedules.

TVTiP
The TVTimes Project 1955-1985 provides unique online access to the listings of the London Edition of the TVTimes, previously only accessible to researchers in rare printed sets of the TVTimes. It allows for searching for programmes, production staff and performers.

Terms of Access: only available to bona fide students, researchers and teachers in further and higher education in the United Kingdom and to BUFVC members. Outside Oxford, sign in using your Oxford University Single Sign On account.

CAIDA
The Cooperative Association for Internet Data Analysis (CAIDA) collects different types of data at geographically and topologically diverse locations, and makes this data available to the research community. The CAIDA Tools site contains a variety of internet measurement and visualization software as well as a taxonomy of available research and visualization tools.

ClickZ Stats
A guide to Internet statistics, Internet marketing demographics, Internet advertising research, e-commerce trends.

CORE (Computing Research & Education) Rankings Portal
Provides a quality assessment of major conferences in the Computer Science and Information Technologies disciplines.
It is managed by the Computing Research and Education Association of Australasia. Rankings are based on a mix of indicators including citation rates, paper submission and acceptance rates, and the visibility and research track record of the key people hosting the conference and managing its technical program.

DocNow
Documenting the Now responds to the public's use of social media for chronicling historically significant events as well as demand from scholars, students, and archivists, among others, seeking a user-friendly means of collecting and preserving this type of digital content. DocNow has a strong commitment to prioritizing ethical practices when working with social media content, especially in terms of collection and long-term preservation.

DomainTools Internet Statistics
Provides a snapshot of the changing nature of the internet collecting up-to-date information on domains, whois records, IP addresses, name servers, mailservers, etc.

European Audiovisual Observatory Yearbook (2014–2016)
Provides a wide range of statistical data on the four main industry branches of the audiovisual sector in Europe: the film industry; television; video/DVD; on-demand audiovisual services.

Europeana Newspapers
Aggregating 18 million digitised historic newspaper pages for Europeana and The European Library. Includes around 30 million newspaper pages from 25 libraries in 23 European countries.

FBIS: Foreign Broadcast Information Service Daily Reports 1975–1996
Contains selected broadcasts, newspaper articles and government statements from around the world, translated into English and issued by an agency of the US government.

Internet Traffic Report
Monitors the flow of data around the world.

Internet World Stats
An International website that features up to date world Internet Usage, Population Statistics, Social Media Stats and Internet Market Research Data, for over 243 individual countries and world regions.

Mobile Coverage Explorer
Representation of the area covered by mobile networks around the world (includes data for 2007–2009, 2011–2019). It is supplied as polygon data which has been created from submissions made directly to Collins Bartholomew or the GSMA from network operators who provide roaming detail for inclusion in the GSMA’s Roaming and Coverage Maps web application. This data is supplemented with coverage created from OpenCellID, the world's largest open database of cell towers.

OECD Data: Innovation and Technology
Includes data on Information and communication technology, as well as Broadband access. OECD.Stat, its database, provides data and metadata on ICT access and usage by household & individuals and businesses for OECD countries and selected non-member economies.

Pew Research Center: Internet & Technology
The center's Internet Project offers access to raw data sets from their research which are made available as single compressed archive files (.zip file).

StatCounter GlobalStats
Statistics and trends in browser usage, operating systems and screen resolution. Stats are based on aggregate data, and are updated and made available every day.

UKDS: Information and communication  
Data on a wide range of ICT topics, such as mobile communication, telework, social-media, radio, television, internet use, mass media, infrastructure, security and trust. Go to Discover to search and browse data collections, series, case studies, and ESRC outputs on Media, communication and language.

UNESCO observatory of killed journalists
Search by country, time period, nationality, gender, etc.

World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers

World Press Trends (WPT) Database
A dynamic, continuously updated database includes the summary tables, also allowing users to produce their own, customized reports, which can be exported to PDF or to Excel format.

World Press Trends Report and Database (2009 ed.)

World News Connection Archive 1995–2013
Newspaper articles, broadcast transcripts and datelines from around the world, translated into English by the US government.

World Telecommunication/ICT Indicators Database
Holds statistics covering fixed-telephone networks, mobile-cellular telephone subscriptions, quality of service, Internet (including fixed- and mobile-broadband subscription data), traffic, staff, prices, revenue, investment and statistics on ICT access and use by households and individuals. Selected demographic, macroeconomic and broadcasting statistics are also included. The Social Science Library holds years 2007-2010 on CD-ROMs.
