Data Service: Global and multi-regional data

Some data resources allow advanced browsing of data collected according to region or country, or in some cases across region and country.

Agricultural Science and Technology Indicators (ASTI) Database
Open-access data and analysis on agricultural research investment and capacity in low- and middle-income countries provided by IPFRI (International Food Policy Research Institute). You can filter the data by country, indicator, or subindicator.

Visit the IPFRI's website to search or browse ASTI datasets, or use various tools, like Data Africa, an open data visualization platform designed to provide information on key themes for research and development, such as agriculture, climate, poverty and child health across 13 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. There is also the Interactive Tool for Public Expenditure on Different Sectors, for understanding linkages between different sectors of public spending.

AREAER Online
The Annual Report on Exchange Arrangements and Exchange Restrictions (AREAER) tracks the exchange rate and trade regimes of all members of the International Monetary Fund and three territories (Aruba, Hong Kong SAR, and Curaçao and Sint Maarten—formerly the Netherlands Antilles). Data can be searched across years, countries, and specific categories.

Databanks International: Cross-National Time-Series (CNTS) Data Archive
This longitudinal national dataseries provides ranges of annual data from 1815 to the present for over 200 countries with 196 variables with comprehensive listing of international and national country data facts. General categories include demographic, social, political, and economic topics. For more information about the data archive, go to the publisher's site.

Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) Country Reports
Data and analysis from the Economist Intelligence Unit which provides an overview of an individual country and covers politics, economy, risk, industry and other issues. This analysis is also used as the basis for five year forecasts of future developments. Reports and statistics are updated monthly.

GADM Database of Global Administrative Areas
A spatial database of the location of the world's administrative areas (or administrative boundaries) for use in GIS and similar software. Administrative areas in this database are countries and lower level subdivisions such as provinces, departments, etc.
Data can be downloaded by country or for the whole world.

International historical statistics: 1750-2010
The latest edition of the authoritative collection of historical statistics. Updated to 2010 wherever possible, it provides key economic and social indicators for the last 260 years, serving as an essential reference source.

International Election Monitoring: Three Global Datasets on Election Quality, Election Events and International Election Observation
Data collection focusing on elections and election monitoring throughout the world on the national level.
Data in this collection are available only to users at ICPSR member institutions.

International Labour Organization (ILO): Regions and countries
ILO knowledge portal connects country information and data on labour laws, standards, policies and statistics.

International Monetary Fund (IMF): Data
The IMF Country information database includes information on 189 countries, members of the organization which is generally updated daily. Information includes the financial position of the country in the Fund, its transactions with the Fund, economic evaluations and projections, as well as a chronologically ordered list of press releases concerning the desired listed country.

NationMaster
A compilation of data from various sources, one-stop resource for country statistics on everything from obesity to murders.

OECD: Data  
A major source for global monthly, quarterly and annual data and statistics on trade and international development. Most of these surveys are made available through the UK Data Service but further analysis and commentary is provided by the OECD iLibrary.

OECD iLibrary: Country statistical profiles
The key tables by country statistical profiles include a wide range of indicators on economy, education, energy, environment, foreign aid, health, information and communication, labour, migration, R&D, trade and society. Historical data refer to the latest eight time periods.

Open Data Barometer
A global measure of how governments are publishing and using open data for accountability, innovation and social impact. The Leaders Edition looks at the 30 governments that have adopted the Open Data Charter and those that, as G20 members, have committed to G20 Anti-Corruption Open Data Principles.

StatsAPEC: Data for the Asia-Pacific region

  • Key Indicators Database facilitates detailed analysis of trade, financial and socio-economic trends in the Asia-Pacific region.

  • Bilateral Linkages Database facilitates detailed analysis of the trade and investment flows within APEC and between APEC and the world.

Access to the databases is free-of-charge and the data can be exported to Microsoft Excel.

United Nations country profiles
Comprehensive guide all member states of the United Nations including summary statistics, economic and social indicators and statistics on environment and trade.

United Nations Data
An access and dissemination point for statistics gathered by the United Nations. A country data services tool is also provided which lists all of the statistical agencies of member states.

United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP)
The ESCAP statistical database provides a regional perspective on development issues in Asia and the Pacific. It contains over 370 indicators disaggregated into over 1500 data series organized in 16 domains. SDG global indicators for which data is available have been incorporated into the ESCAP database.

Statistical Yearbook for Asia and the Pacific 2016: SDG Baseline Report
Presents the SDG baseline for the Asia and the Pacific both at the regional and sub-regional levels for selected targets of each SDG, highlighting critical gaps and challenges of the region in achieving the SDGs and informing inter-governmental and inter-agency regional decision making in support of implementing the 2030 development agenda in the region.

UNSD Statistical Databases
An online data service that allows searching a variety of UN statistical databases through a single entry point.

World Bank Open Data: Countries and Economies
Country based ‘at a glance’ resource which provides an overview including information on economic growth, gross domestic product, inflation and population. Tools are provided to graph, map and compare more than 1,000 time series indicators from the World Development Indicators and more than 5,000 indicators from other collections such as education statistics, gender statistics and regional development Indicators.

World Inequality Database (WID.world)
Provides open and convenient access to the most extensive available database on the historical evolution of the world distribution of income and wealth, both within countries and between countries.
Stata package available to download directly from WID.world data.

World Population Prospects
Official United Nations population estimates and projections. The main results are presented in a series of Excel files displaying key demographic indicators for each development group, income group, region, subregion and country or area for selected periods or dates within 1950-2100.
