Bodleian Libraries reading rooms to reopen

28 July 2020

The Bodleian Libraries reading rooms will open in a phased resumption of Library activities commencing on Monday 10 August

The reopening will start with the Upper and Lower Reading Rooms of the Old Bodleian Library, more will follow the week after including the Social Science Library, Radcliffe Camera, and Weston Library.

Access to open-shelf collections and non-print legal material via library PCs will be possible but the libraries will not be restarting deliveries from the Book Storage Facility (BSF) until early September. The free Scan and Deliver service from the BSF will remain in place.

The safety of our staff and users is of paramount importance and to maintain social distancing, the Library will be introducing a range of new measures including an online system to book study spaces in advance and one-way systems in our buildings. Hand sanitiser will be available for both staff and readers and, as a precautionary measure, two-metre social distancing will apply throughout the reading rooms and other areas of our buildings.

Richard Ovenden OBE, Bodley's Librarian, said:

'I'm thrilled to be reopening our reading rooms and can't wait to welcome readers back. While you've been away, we have worked hard to ensure our spaces are safe and accessible for everybody. While our physical spaces have been closed, our learning and research has been transformed online and has provided much-needed resources. This is a great step in ensuring we can provide even more for readers.'

For University students, please note that while the reading rooms are reopening, you should only return to the University during the long vacation with the explicit permission of your college or department.

Exceptions apply to clinical medical students who are completing their placements as essential workers and Postgraduate Research students who are returning to labs and research facilities under the Return to On-site Working Programme. Departments will be in touch with these students directly.
