The use of glimmering gold and pricey pigments was undoubtedly the most eye-catching element available to the craftspeople involved in the graphic design of the page.
This talk will explore the role of the illuminator in the contexts of production, providing an introduction to the techniques employed, the types of texts typically ornamented, and the various functions of the images used. The exhibition uncovers the myriad ways in which the craft sought 'to preserve, clarify, adorn, authorize and interpret writing in English', and this illustrated lecture will further exemplify these motives by drawing upon manuscript holdings from around the world.
