Description

In October 1917 Oxford University’s Convocation accepted from the family of the publisher George Smith the gift of the copyrights and stock of the Dictionary of National Biography. Oxford University Press kept the DNB in print and extended it through regular Supplements covering the lives of the recently-deceased, before in 2004 publishing a revision of the entire work as the Oxford DNB.

In this centenary lecture Professor Sir David Cannadine, General Editor of the Dictionary and author of its third longest entry (Lady Thatcher), published in 2017, reflects on Oxford’s connexion with an enduring national institution.
