The Burney family stood at the centre of cultural life of eighteenth and nineteenth-century England. Fertility of invention could be said to be part of the family heritage, expressed in a variety of ways, through literature or music or painting.
The habit of writing was begun in childhood, as can be seen in several manuscripts that have come to light, suggesting a family culture of creativity that lies behind the later professional works.
