Description

Over the course of the long 18th century, newspapers became a common medium for the dissemination of information in Britain. Drawing on life writing, textbooks and works of educational theory, children’s books and educational ephemera for the young, this paper explores the proposition that literate children were expected to be familiar with the news reported in the papers, including politics, crime, commerce and military and naval engagements.

The lecture is followed by a reception in Blackwell Hall.
