Roy Jenkins' biography

The first of two sessions focusing on the papers of Roy Jenkins, later Baron Jenkins of Hillhead (1920-2003), the seminar was chaired by Professor Martin Ceadel, New College, Oxford.


John Campbell spoke about [PDF, 342KB] his research for his forthcoming biography of Roy Jenkins, Labour Cabinet Minister; President of the European Commission; founding member of  the Social Democratic Party; Leader of the Liberal-Democrats in the House of Lords, writer, and Chancellor of the  University of Oxford.


From the documents now in the Bodleian John Campbell chose an extract, dated 22 October 1979, from the original typescript of Jenkinsí European Diary describing his interview with the Conservative Prime Minister, Mrs Margaret Thatcher. From the diaries currently on loan to him John Campbell selected entries for 14-20 October 1968; 9 June 1975; 26 November 1979, and 22 October 1979.
