Upper Camera closed during Summer 2008

6 June 2008

During the Long Vacation 2008 the Upper Camera will be closed from Monday 23 June to Saturday 4 October inclusive. Readers will be accommodated in the Lower Camera and a fetching service from open shelf material in the Upper Camera will be provided.

The closure is due to the conservation project which will restore the windows in the dome of the Radcliffe Camera. The project will begin this summer and will last for three years with work being undertaken during each of the Long Vacations 2008, 2009 and 2010.

The restoration involves replacing the existing windows with temporary ones, while the original windows are being refurbished before being reinstalled.

External scaffolding will be erected on the Catte Street side of the Camera.  An open grid of scaffolding will be retained inside the reading room throughout the three year period to facilitate the works.
