Richard Ovenden, Bodley's Librarian, has been elected a member of the American Philosophical Society, the oldest learned society in the United States.
Ovenden was one of 27 distinguished scientists, humanists, social scientists, and civic and cultural leaders who were elected members at the American Philosophical Society's spring 2015 annual meeting. Early members included George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, while 20th century members included Albert Einstein and Robert Frost. Today, the Society has just over 1000 members, 163 of whom are international members.
This latest honour follows Ovenden's recent election as President of the Digital Preservation Coalition. The DPC is a not-for-profit membership organization that raises awareness of the importance of the preservation of digital material and associated strategic, cultural and technological issues. He previously served as the Chair of the Digital Preservation Coalition.
