The passing of Sir Charles Mackerras is a sad day for the world of music. Our thoughts are with his wife and loved ones.
Sir Charles was a true friend to the Bodleian Libraries. He donated musical scores by Haydn to our collection and, together with Lady Mackerras, recently donated to the fund to endow the Bodleian's Curator of Music post in appreciation of the renowned pianist, Alfred Brendel.
We at the Bodleian will remember Sir Charles for his passion for musical excellence on the world stage and his enthusiasm for sharing his musical scholarship with others.
The Bodleian is honoured that the new Music Reading Room in the Weston Library, which will open in 2015, will be named in honour of Sir Charles thanks to a donation from the Dunard Fund. It will, we hope, stand as a fitting tribute to the life and work of a remarkable man.
