Computing Services
Personal computers
It is possible for readers to use their own laptop computers in many Bodleian Libraries. These must be registered before they can be connected to the library network.
For details of how to do this in the Central Bodleian Library, see the Bodleian's using a laptop web page.
To find out about using your laptop in other libraries, please consult individual library web pages.
Note that registration of a laptop for use on one library's network is unlikely to allow use of the same machine on other library networks. Library users can expect to find computing facilities in all Bodleian Libraries, although the nature of these and the applications available may vary according to the library. Please check the individual library web pages for information on what is available.

Advice for Readers
The wireless service covers the central seating areas of library reading rooms.
To use the service please connect your laptop or mobile device to Bodleian-Libraries. When you open a web browser you will be prompted for your Library Card/University Card barcode number and your password. (For non-University members, these are the same credentials as used for the SOLO patron accounts whereas University members use Oxford SSO for their SOLO patron accounts). Once you have entered your details correctly you will be admitted to the network.
Library Cards and University Cards are issued with default passwords of the users' date of birth in the format DDMMMYYYY (e.g. 16OCT1988). You should reset your password at the first opportunity, which you can do from here:
https://register.bodleian.ox.ac.uk
Alternatively, you can ask a member of staff to help you.
The default password based on date of birth will expire 28 days after first issue. An email reminder will be sent beforehand with instructions for resetting your password.
Please note that if you change your Library Card/University Card password, you will not be able to use your new password to login to the wireless network for about one minute.
Lastly, if you are accustomed to using the University's OWL or Eduroam service to connect to wireless networks in the University you may continue to do so.
Oxford University Single Sign-On (SSO) account
For members of the University, an Oxford University Single Sign-On (SSO) is necessary to access some resources within the University. However it is essential if you want to access certain electronic resources from outside the University. Details of the databases requiring an Oxford SSO account can be found from the electronic resources FAQs.
You need to register for an Oxford SSO account before you leave Oxford as the application has to come from within the University domain, i.e. ox.ac.uk. You can self-register to get an Oxford SSO account. Make sure that you have your University Card number available as you will need it during the registration process. Go to Oxford SSO to find out how to set up an SSO account. The page to which this link points contains a link to the actual self-registration form.
External users are not eligible to access databases requiring Oxford SSO authorisation from outside the University. However, access to some of these resources from within the University may be possible. Please ask at individual libraries for guidance.
There are further details about the Oxford SSO, including how to apply for and how to activate the account.
