Disabled Readers

The following procedures, services and facilities are currently available:

Alexander Library of Ornithology

The Alexander Library is located on Level C of the Zoology Department.

  • Disabled parking (in the car park underneath the building) can be arranged by telephoning in advance.
  • Lift from the car park - fairly small but meets specification.
  • Entrance to the building is via a dropped curb
  • Heavy double doors meet specification, although there is a slight upwards slope and assistance may be required.Zoology libraries are accessed through a very heavy door; assistance may be required.
  • Space in the library is limited.
  • Average table clearance meets specification.
  • Photocopier is at height 1380mm, and assistance may be required.
  • Alexander Library is at the rear of the main library: assistance may be required to access some material.
  • OLIS terminals are +2 stairs in the Alexander Library.
  • Canteens on same level as the Zoology libraries: one canteen counter has a height of 1040mm, the other has a height of 900mm. The vending machines are at height 1550mm; assistance may be required.
  • Various aids are available from the Enquiry Desk:
    • Magnifying lens,
    • Document holder for people with motor skills impairment,
    • Ear-phones for use with accessibility software,
    • Daylight lamp for the visually impaired,
    • Acetate sheets for people with dyslexia.
  • Assistance is available from library staff.

Radcliffe Science Library

  • Car-parking near the library may be available by prior arrangement,
  • Wheelchair access, wide doors, main door is level with pavement.
  • Lift access suitable for wheelchairs to all public areas.
  • Evacuation lift from Levels 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8 for use in emergencies.
  • Purpose built toilets on Levels 2, 3, 4 and 6.
  • Induction loops at enquiry desks.
  • A portable induction loop on request at the Entrance Hall Enquiry Desk.
  • Infrared induction system in Training Room.
  • Ergonomic keyboard and mouse in Training Room.
  • Height adjustable desk in the Training Room and on Level 2.
  • Various aids are available from the Level 2 enquiry desk:
    • Magnifying lens,
    • Document holder for people with motor skills impairment,
    • Ear-phones for use with accessibility software,
    • Daylight lamp for the visually impaired,
    • Acetate sheets for people with dyslexia,
    • A set of risers to raise a computer monitor.
  • Assistance is available from library staff.

Sherardian Library of Plant Taxonomy

The Sherardian Library is located in the South Building of the Plants Sciences Department.

  • Car-parking near the library may be available by prior arrangement,
  • Handrails on all main stairs.
  • Unisex disabled lavatory on the ground floor.
  • Main entrance to the South Building is +11, +2 stairs through double doors.
  • Alternative entrance on the left of the building. Door locked but an intercom system can be worked independently.
  • Lift to all floors.
  • Flat access to the library on the first floor, which is on a split-level (ramp).
  • Various aids are available from the Enquiry Desk:
    • Magnifying lens,
    • Document holder for people with motor skills impairment,
    • Ear-phones for use with accessibility software,
    • Daylight lamp for the visually impaired,
    • Acetate sheets for people with dyslexia.
