The ‘big move’ transferring the stock of the Plant Sciences and Zoology libraries to the RSL begins on Mon 6 Sept and will take about two weeks. The removal company, Edes,  will begin in Plant Sciences and move on to Zoology when Plant Sciences is finished.

During the move access to the departmental libraries will be restricted for safety reasons. However the Alexander Library (in Zoology) and the new Sherardian Library (in the Herbarium) in Plant Sciences will be accessible and able to receive visitors if required. We recommend, however, that regular users avoid the libraries at this time as there will be considerable noise and disruption.

The stock will be reshelved in the RSL on arrival and available for immediate use. The catalogue records will be amended to show the new locations within a few days. The arrangement at RSL will be as follows:

  • Periodicals: A-Z sequence through levels 8-7-6 and 2
  • Bulletins: Level 5
  • Books, classified by Library of Congress: Level 2
  • Reprints, maps, theses: Level 2

Many periodicals which are now available electronically will be moved to offsite storage at the new Swindon facility later this year, and will then be requestable online. Until this facility is up and running, it will be necessary to ask staff to retrieve any off-site material, but nothing should be inaccessible.

Ornithology and plant taxonomy will remain in the departments as now.

Once the new arrangements are in place, we will be happy to offer guided tours on request!

Please contact Roger Mills if you have any questions or concerns.
