Finding a Book
Library layout and OLIS Location codes.
PHI Main Library
Main Reading Room. Open access, holds the main book collection, and work-stations for access to catalogues and databases. Also a good place to work. Laptops may be used here (side desks only).
PHI Help Desk
Library office (staff area) Confined and special reserve books are kept here, as well as offprints, exam papers etc. This is also the place for issues and returns and inquiries.
PHI Computing Resources Room
Open access. Three workstations for access to catalogues, databases and e-mail. Laptops may be used here.
PHI Oval Room
Items with Library of Congress shelf marks. This is a quiet reading area with no computers or laptop use.
PHI Cupboard
Outsize books [Large], kept in the right-hand cupboard at the end of the Main Library.
PHI Domus
Domus Room. Staff access only. Antiquarian books from the Fowler collection available for use in the library only.
PHI Harré
Stack (little-used) books, available on request for normal loan. Antiquarian [A] books (pre-1900), available for use in the library only. Fill in a stack request form at the Help Desk, hand it in, and the book will be fetched within 30 minutes. The book is then kept for you at the Help Desk for two days.
PHI Basement
Stack (little-used) journals, available on request Fill in a request form at the Help Desk and the journal will be fetched within 30 minutes. The journal is then kept for you at the Help Desk for two days.
Reshelving
Books issued from the Helpdesk, Stacks or Periodicals Room should be returned to the HelpDesk. Books from open access areas should be placed in the book troughs for reshelving by staff.
Classification scheme
The library currently uses an in-house classification scheme, which arranges philosophers in a historical sequence, and then arranges contemporary philosophy in a subject sequence. As part of the integration of Bodleian humanities libraries all collections are converting to Library of Congress. New items to the library have LC classification.
