Personal updates

You can keep up to date with developments in your field in several ways:

  • Have the Tables of Contents pages from your favourite journals delivered by email
  • Receive regular Topic Alerts of the latest articles on your subject from databases such as Medline and Cinahl
  • Keep in touch with colleagues and fellow researchers by joining a JISCmail list.

Tables of Contents (TOCs)

Some TOCs can be emailed to you for free from journal and publisher homepages. MedBioWorld provides a list of links to many journal and publisher homepages. ZETOC Alert is a TOC service from the British Library that will email you the contents pages from several journals on a regular basis.

Topic Alerts

Create a search strategy according to your clinical question or area of special interest, which will be used to look for references to relevant articles whenever the database is updated. Contact us to set up an Alert on your behalf, or set up your own Alerts on a number of different databases.
Evidence Updates from the BMJ Group and McMaster University's Health Information Research Unit allows you to register your interests and receive email alerts and searching access for literature that is matched to your personal clinical interests.

Oxford University Topic Alerts

You can save a search as an Alert in range of databases (Scopus, Medline, Cinahl, Embase etc.) and each time the databases are updated you will be emailed the details of new articles matching your search. This Alert service is available via OVID on OxLIP; you will need your Single Sign On details to set it up within your OVID Personal Account.

NHS Staff Topic Alerts

You can run a search once in a range of databases, and save it as an Alert to receive regular email updates of new articles matching your search. This service is available via Clinical Databases on the NHS Evidence site and you'll need an NHS Athens username and password.
