Bodleian Health Care Libraries 2010 User Survey

The 2010 Bodleian Health Care Libraries user survey captured the views of over 200 library members (including 20% of the medical student population).

Results were largely very positive with very high levels of user satisfaction reported in areas such as access to our space, our staff, our collections, our physical environment, our IT provision and our physical library environments. For example 97% or respondents were "Totally Satisfied¨ or "Somewhat Satisfied" with the general library environment in the Cairns Library.

The results of the survey also confirmed to us areas in which further development is required including: access to/availability of medical student textbooks; a need to improve the medical student PCs in the Cairns Library; a need to publicise our training and group study spaces; a need to better publicise our outreach services; a need to investigate the usefulness of our current standard loan period; and areas in which our physical space can be improved.

A full summary of the survey findings can be found here.

Actions to be taken or already undertaken in response to the survey results :

  • BHCL publicity to include a focus on training sessions and availability of training spaces and the group study room.
  • We will investigate what funding might be available to extend our staffed hours at the Knowledge Centre and the Cairns Library.
  • We will increase our provision of electronic versions of key medical student textbooks.
  • We will investigate ways in which we can improve our book collection space.
  • The medical student PCs have all now been replaced.
  • As part of our on-going refurbishment planning we will try and locate additional PCs for users in the Cairns Library.
  • As part of our on-going refurbishment planning we will try and create a ¡§quiet zone¡¨ and a quiet study room within the main body of the Cairns Library.
  • We have placed orders for all of the specific books requested and have added journals requested to our wish lists.
  • We will take further soundings on the length of our loan periods with users and with similar services elsewhere in the UK.
  • We have recently purchased several new e-book and e-journal packages for OUH Trust staff including MD Consult, 123Doc Question Banks and the 123Library Exam Preparation e-Book Collection.
  • BHCL Outreach Team services to be publicised more aggressively to NHS and MSD staff.
