Collection overview
Collection policy for Music
Libraries and reading rooms
The music collections of the Bodleian Library comprise a research collection of over 500,000 items of printed music from the 16th century onwards, 4,000 manuscripts from medieval times to the present day, and 60,000 books and periodicals, based in part on British legal deposit material, but also rich in donated and purchased items. Classical, popular and non-western musical traditions are all represented. The material is for reference only. For the duration of the refurbishment of the New Library, music materials (except for manuscripts and some special printed collections) are consulted in southern half of Selden End of Duke Humfrey’s Library.
Important e-resources
The main electronic resources for Music:
- Grove Music Online
Online version of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, also incorporating The Grove Dictionary of Opera. (Now part of Oxford Music Online.) - RILM Abstracts of Musical Literature
Indexes and abstracts to musical literature of all types from 1967 onwards. - RIPM
Retrospective index to 19th- and early 20th-century music periodicals. - RISM Series A/II
Union-catalogue of music manuscripts of individual composers 1600-1800. Complements the various RISM printed volume series. Coverage is still comparatively small, especially for holdings of British libraries. - Electronic Journals
A wide range of music journals is now available electronically, either complete or in part. This includes back-runs of ca. 60 core journals held in JSTOR Music but many more besides. Access is through Oxford University e-Journals, Oxford's electronic journal management system, or OxLIP+. Most may also be found through SOLO.
All databases above are accessed through OxLIP+ and freely available throughout the University.
