Finding Journals
The EFL subscribes to around 80 current periodicals. The most recent issue of each journal is displayed in the Current Periodicals section immediately on the right as you enter the library. Back issues are shelved in an alphabetical sequence after the reference section. 18th and 19th century journals and back runs are held in the library stack and the Rare Book Room.
All the EFL's journals are catalogued on SOLO, Oxford Libraries’ catalogue, and a printed alphabetical list for browsing may be consulted at the issue desk. Journals may not be borrowed; self-service photocopying facilities are available in the Gallery.
Finding articles in journals
If you have a complete reference to a journal article: e.g. Jesch, J. 'History in the political sagas', Medium Aevum, 62 (1993), pp.210-220, you can go straight to the periodicals section to find volume 62 of Medium Aevum under M in the alphabetical sequence.
If you have only partial information or if you want to know how to find articles on a particular author or subject, you can use the various journal indexes available electronically via OxLIP+. There are a number of online services, such as the MLA International Bibliography, which allow you to search for references across a specified range of years. Please ask library staff for help in getting started using these services. MLA International Bibliography
This database indexes articles from over 4,000 humanities journals from 1926 to the present. You can search for articles by author, subject or title, and complex combined keyword searches are also possible.
The MLA also provides links to SOLO catalogue and full text articles, where available. Library staff will be pleased to help with your searches wherever possible. Alternatively, you can view the ProQuest 'Getting started with the MLA' guide.
Arts & Humanities [Citation] Index
A&HCI is another abstracting and indexing service and can be searched in the same way as the MLA Bibliography. Extending back to 1981, the database contains more than two million records and it is updated every week. Its advantage over the MLA is that you can also check how many times a particular article or author has been cited.
ABELL: Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature
Available through OxLIP+, via the Criticism and Reference page of LION. Indexes over 880,000 bibliographic citations from 1920 to the present.
Periodicals Archive Online (formerly PCI Full Text)
Periodicals Archive Online is a major online periodicals archive (1665-1995) providing access to articles from over 350 journals, e.g. full text of the Dublin Review from volume 1, 1836.
