Borrowing books

University members

All current staff and students of the University of Oxford may register for a borrowing membership of the Department of Education Library.  You will need to bring your University card to the Library desk to register.

External visitors

Visitors who are not members of the University of Oxford are welcome to use the library for reference. You will need to apply for a reader's card via the Bodleian Libraries, if you are making more than a single visit. There may be a charge, depending on your status.

Overnight and Reference Books

In addition to your allowance of Normal loan books (see below), you can borrow up to 5 Overnight books (with red stickers on the front).

Overnight loans are due back before the library closes the following day (or on Monday, if borrowed on a Friday or Saturday). You can renew them online via SOLO.

Dissertations, journals, and books labelled as Reference (with yellow stickers on the ront) are for use in the Library only.

This ensures all students are able to consult the key texts they need.

Renewals

Loans may be renewed as often as you like, as long as they are not reserved by another reader.  You can renew online, through your account on SOLO. (See the Renewals & your account section of the SOLO guide for detailed instructions.)

Books being renewed on the due date must be renewed before the library closes.  You may also renew books in person or by telephoning the library on (01865) (2)74028.

Fines

Please return your books on time, as you will be fined for late return (20p per day for normal loans, and 50p per hour for overnight books). Fines were agreed with student representatives, and are used to try to make sure that material remains in circulation and can be accessed fairly by everyone.

You can pay your fines in cash at the library, or for fines over £2 you can pay online via the University Store.

If your fines get to more than £10 you will not be able to borrow or renew books until they are addressed. Please get in touch with us if you want to discuss your fines.

Vacation loans

During the vacations the library creates special extended loan periods to make borrowing and returning books easier for students who may not be staying in Oxford.

  • Vacation loans begin on Thursday on 8th week. Books are due back Tuesday of 1st week.
  • For PGCE students we use PGCE term dates.

If you are due to finish your course, your loans will be due back before your university card expires.

All overnight books remain overnight during vacations. When the library closes fully at Christmas and Easter overnight material can borrowed on the day before we close until the day we re-open.
