What access does a Bodleian Reader Card allow me?

Bodleian Reader Cards allow access to a number of services:

Library Access

Bodleian Reader Cards allow reference-only access to the Bodleian Libraries. Your current status, which you are asked to provide when completing the Bodleian Libraries' Admissions Form, will determine the terms of access and the type of Bodleian Reader Card with which you will be issued.

The Bodleian Libraries are divided into two groups: Group 1 and Group 2. Group 1 and Group 2 Bodleian Libraries are not available to undergraduate students and taught postgraduates during full term for the University of Oxford. Group 2 Libraries are only available for holders of Bodleian Reader Cards outside of full term for the University of Oxford.

Modern Printed Materials

Bodleian Reader Cards allow reference-only access to modern printed materials.

Modern printed materials are usually classified as all books, printed journals and newspapers, maps and music printed after 1800, unless they are considered Special Collections materials.

Holders of Bodleian Reader Cards are able to consult open shelf modern printed materials held by the Bodleian Libraries within reading rooms, and to order closed stack modern printed materials into reading rooms.

Details of how to order closed stack material are given on admission to the Bodleian Libraries.

Applicants hoping to consult closed stack material on the same day as they visit the Bodleian Libraries' Admissions Office for admission must have ordered material in advance. For more information about pre-ordering closed stack material, click here.

Special Collections

Applicants seeking access to Special Collections (manuscripts or archival material of any date, ephemera, material published before 1801, material in a named collected, or other rare material) should make this clear as part of their Statement of Research Need, when completing the Bodleian Libraries' Admissions Form. Applicants are encouraged in particular to include the details of any Special Collections material that they would like to consult initially, and a statement of how this relates to their current research.

If permission is granted, readers will be issued with a Bodleian Reader Card which indicates access to Special Collections material with an 'A' instead of an 'S' above the barcode.

Printing, Photocopying, and Scanning

PCAS

PCAS is the Bodleian Libraries' system for printing, photocopying, and scanning.

PCAS accounts are automatically generated when a profile is created and a Bodleian Reader Card is issued for the first time.

Login details for PCAS accounts will be given at Admission to the Bodleian Libraries.

Using their PCAS account, holders of Bodleian Reader Cards are able to copy, to scan, and to print using the self-service photocopiers available in reading rooms.

Photocopiers are available in most reading rooms.

Digital cameras may be used in some areas.

Not all material may be copied or scanned using the self-service photocopiers and the Bodleian Libraries offers a staff-mediated service for such material.

You can find our more about printing, photocopying, and scanning here.

You can find further information relating specifically to PCAS accounts here.

All copying must be done within the terms of the relevant copyright legislation. You can find out more about copyright legislation here.

Library Help

Staff

Staff are available in most reading rooms and holders of Bodleian Reader Cards should feel free to ask any member of staff if they require help or guidance.

Straight forward enquiries are usually resolved immediately.

Complex questions involving specialist subject knowledge can be referred to a senior subject librarian or member of curatorial staff to provide you with expert assistance. However, such assistance may not always be immediately available.

Most reading rooms and libraries produce printed guides, maps, plans, and online guides.

An introductory webpage designed to answer the most frequent questions asked by new readers can be found here.
