Mediated Services

The staffed photocopying service gives you the opportunity to make A4 and A3 copies, in black & white or colour, from items excluded from self-service copying. Orders can be placed in any reading room on any day up to 30 minutes before closing time. The turnaround time for jobs submitted to the staff-mediated photocopying service is currently 72 hours.

  1. At the staff desk, please complete the blue PC2 form. Fill in all the details in ballpoint pen or pencil. Please do not separate the two sheets of the form.
  2. A separate form is required for each volume or issue.
  3. Please remember to sign the copyright declaration for all requests to reproduce copyright material.
  4. Paper slips are available at each staff desk for marking sections to be copied. Please mark each extract to be copied at the beginning and end. Please note the page numbers of each section to be photocopied on the beginning slip.
  5. If you require colour copies, please tag them separately with a ‘colour’ slip.
  6. Hand the completed form to staff with the books. You can pay with your PCAS card or cheque. The number of copies is unlimited, subject to copyright restrictions.

Refer to prices and payments for photocopying charges.

Completed orders

Completed orders are placed in pigeon holes twice a day at approximately 1pm and 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Orders from the Old Library and the Radcliffe Camera should be collected from the pigeon holes adjacent to the Main Enquiry Desk in the Lower Reading Room of the Old Library.

Uncollected orders are cleared after 3 months.

Items on interlibrary loan

Libraries that have loaned items to the Bodleian Library for you to consult may allow some photocopying from these items.

When copying is allowed, copying will be undertaken via the staff service, and the same copyright and preservation restrictions are applied to this material as to Bodleian material. Additional restrictions placed on copying by the library lending an item, including bans on photocopying, will be enforced.

Staff may be able to advise but may direct you to the interlibrary loans section:

Microfilms and microfiches

Readers may make prints from published microfilms or microfiches using the microfilm/fiche reader/printers in the Upper or Lower Reading Rooms of the Old Library. A4 or A3 prints cost 25p per print. They are paid for at the reserve desk from your PCAS (Print, Copy and Scan) account.

Published microfilms and microfiches can be mostly be found on OLIS. The majority of those not on OLIS are listed in A guide to microform holdings in the Bodleian Library, an orange-covered A4 booklet available for consultation at all reading room enquiry and reserve counters.

Readers wishing to have copies from microfilms or microfiches made for them should make an application using the Imaging Services order form (PDF).

Manuscripts

Modern (post-1800) manuscript material

As a general rule, manuscript materials are not sent for photocopying, although a limited amount of photocopying by staff from mainly unbound and unpublished modern manuscripts material subject to restrictions of copyright, ownership and physical condition is sometimes allowed. Please ask staff for guidance before making an application as restrictions will apply to many items. To apply:

Oxford University theses

Copying of Oxford theses, even of a single page, may require the author's written permission. This, or a photocopy of it, must be submitted to reading room staff before such an order can be accepted. The annual successful candidates list, found in Duke Humfrey's Library, gives the college, and the respective college development office can generally forward the letter. Restrictions will apply to many items; please ask staff in the Special Collections Reading Room or Duke Humfrey's Library for guidance or email: oxford.theses@bodleian.ox.ac.uk

Digital copies of theses and copies made for library or institutional use always require the author's written permission.

Pre-1800, fragile or manuscript material

Full-text searchable reproductions of many works printed before 1800 are available in Early English Books Online or Eighteenth Century Collections Online, both via OxLIP+. These resources are not accessible to non-current members of the University outside the University network.

Alternatively many items are available as published facsimiles, microfilms or microfiches, from which you can make copies.

If the work from which you require copies is not available via either of these methods, please go to the Imaging Services web page.

Please direct specific questions about such orders to imaging@bodleian.ox.ac.uk.
