Annual General Meeting

The sixty-sixth Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday 30 June 2011 at 3.00 pm in the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford

Professor Ian Walmsley, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Research, Academic Services and University Collections, will take the Chair.

After the formal business Professor Diarmaid MacCulloch, DD, FBA, FRHistS, FSA will address the meeting on The King James Bible, after all the fuss.

Diarmaid MacCulloch is Professor of the History of the Church at the University of Oxford and a prize-winning author. His history of Christianity and BBC TV series first appeared in 2009.  He will put seventeenth-century England's most significant book in historical context, assess its enduring impact across the world to the present day, and ask what the future of this iconic text may be amid a welter of new biblical translations.

Dr Sarah Thomas, Bodley’s Librarian, will propose a vote of thanks to the speaker and report on Library matters.   

A selection from the year’s purchases and donations will be exhibited in the Proscholium, from 9.30 am until 6.30 pm on 30th June.

Members and guests are invited to take tea in the Divinity School following the meeting. The sixty-fifth Annual General Meeting of the Friends of the Bodleian was held on Thursday 24 June 2010 at 3.00pm in the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford.

Dr Sally Mapstone, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Personnel and Equality, took the Chair.

After the formal business meeting, Philip Pullman and David Fickling were in conversation, a special talk by the author and his publisher.

Dr Sarah Thomas, Bodley's Librarian, will propose a vote of thanks to the speakers and report on Library matters.

A selection from the year's purchases and donations will be exhibited in the Proscholium from 9am until 6pm on 24th June.

Members and guest took tea in the Divinity School following the meeting. 


The sixty-fourth Annual General Meeting of the Friends of the Bodleian was held on Thursday 25 June at 3.00pm in the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford. 

Professor S. Iversen, Acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Research, took the Chair.

After the formal business meeting The Rt Hon Lord Hurd of Westwell CH, CBE, PC addressed the meeting on Pleasures of an amateur historian.

Dr Sarah Thomas, Bodley's Librarian and Director of University Library Services, proposed a vote of thanks to the speaker and reported on Library matters.

A selection from the year's purchases and donations were exhibited in the Proscholium, at the entrance to the Divinity School, from 9.30am to 6.30pm on 25th June.

Members and guests took tea in the Divinity School following the meeting.

New Chairman of the Friends of the Bodleian appointed

Richard McCabe, Professor of English Language and Literature, University of Oxford and Fellow of Merton College was appointed the new Chairman of the Friends of the Bodleian (FOB) Council, the supporting organization of the Library. The appointment took place during the FOB Annual General Meeting held last Thursday, 25 June.

Professor McCabe takes over from Jon Stallworthy , Professor Emeritus of English, University of Oxford and Fellow and Acting President of Wolfson College. Professor Stallworthy chaired the FOB Council for the last 8 years. Under his leadership, the FOB assisted the Bodleian Library in making a number of notable acquisitions, including the medieval Arabic manuscript entitled ‘The Book of Curiosities of the Sciences’, the Sheldon tapestry map of Gloucestershire, the final working autograph of Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture, the Abinger papers (with the manuscript of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein), Philip Larkin’s letters to Monica Jones, and most recently, the MS of the first opera in the English language, Cavalli’s Erismena.

Dr Chris Fletcher, Head of Western Manuscripts and member of the FOB Council said: ‘The Bodleian Library’s outstanding collections would be much diminished were it not for the great generosity of its many friends over the last 400 years. The Friends of the Bodleian continue this tradition, allowing us to purchase books and manuscripts and also to receive them as gifts, for the benefit of scholars now and in the future.’


The 63rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Society was held in the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford on Thursday, 19 June 2008. The purpose of the meeting was to:

  1. Receive and consider the Report of the Council of Management and the Directors’ Report and Financial Statements for the year ended 31 March 2008.
  2. Elect members of Council.
  3. Elect an Honorary Treasurer.
  4. Appoint Auditors.
  5. Consider any other business which may be transacted at an Ordinary General Meeting. Notice of motions should be sent to the Friends’ Secretary in advance of the Meeting.
