Accessibility Information

Readers with accessibility queries about the Old Bodleian, Radcliffe Camera or Gladstone Link, or with any questions regarding services and facilites for disabled library users can email these to access@bodleian.ox.ac.uk.

Old Bodleian Library

The Upper and Lower Reading Rooms can be reached via a level access route, using the reader lift to access the upper floors. This involves accessing the Old Bodleian from the Old Schools Quad through a restricted entry point. For this reason, any library users who need to use this route should contact access@bodleian.ox.ac.uk to discuss enabling this access in advance of their first visit. As part of this process we will arrange an individual induction to the site which usually lasts approximately 1 hour. Given the nature of the buildings, this is required by the University Fire Officer.

The Upper and Lower Reading Rooms are equipped with height-adjustable desks and task lighting is available to all readers on request. Hearing loops are available at the staff desks. Please note that, due to restrictions imposed by Fire Regulations, readers that require assisted evacuation procedures are only able to use the north wing of these reading rooms.

Duke Humfrey’s Library is only accessible via stairs. It has low lighting levels and some material is held in galleries accessed by steep staircases.

Old Library staff will be able to transfer inaccessible material to an accessible area.

The access page for the Old Bodleian Library provides more detailed information about access to these areas.

Gladstone Link

The Upper Gladstone Link can be reached via a level access route from both the Old Bodleian Library, using the lift then via a tunnel, or from the Radcliffe Camera, using the lift from the Lower Camera. Users of the Gladstone Link must be familiar with both routes as either could be used in an emergency situation. Due to the restricted nature of the Old Library entry point, any library users who need level access to the site should contact access@bodleian.ox.ac.uk to discuss enabling this in advance of their first visit. As part of this process we will arrange an individual induction to the site which usually lasts approximately 1 hour. Given the nature of the buildings, this is required by the University Fire Officer.

The Upper Gladstone Link is equipped with height-adjustable desks and task lighting is available to all readers on request.

The Lower Gladstone Link is only accessible via stairs. Material is housed in rolling cases.
