Disabled visitors

Behind the scenes at the Bodleian Library

All our guided tours are conducted by our professionally trained volunteer guides. We are able to take children age 11 and over into the working areas of the Library on these tours. We regret that the guided tours are not recommended for young children.

The Library is a historic listed building, and we regret there are no lifts available.  Guided tours include a large number of stairs, and the extended tour especially includes some steep stairs and a substantial amount of walking. However, we can accommodate wheelchair access to general ground floor areas.

We strongly advise you to contact us in advance of your planned visit as public tours are occasionally cancelled at very short notice.

Disabled Parking

There are five (5) on-street disabled parking spaces near the Bodleian Library: one (1) in front of Exeter College; two (2) outside Blackwell’s Bookshop on Broad Street and two (2) on South Parks Road, opposite the New Bodleian Library.

Please refer to the Oxford Information Centre (01865 726871 or http://www.visitoxford.org/) for more information on disabled parking spaces and procedures.

Toilets

Currently the closest public toilets for disabled people are located outside Covered Market, in Market Street (ca. 300m away). To use this facility, you must have a RADAR key. These keys can be bought or borrowed from the Oxford Information Centre or from the Oxfordshire Count Council Access Officer on 01865 815591

Hearing loop

We regret  there is no hearing loop available during the guided tours. Please bear in mind that The Bodleian is a working library and in some reading rooms our guides need to speak quietly in order to not to disturb readers. We strongly recommend making contact with a member of our staff prior to the tour to find out more details.

Concessions

We regret there are currently no concessions are available in the Bodleian Library.

Guide dogs and assistance dogs are welcome.
